Benzodiazepines and catatonia: a case report.

Summary

A patient with presumed psychogenic catatonia experienced rapid improvement in mobility and speech after receiving intramuscular lorazepam. This benzodiazepine treatment proved effective for both acute episodes and potential long-term management.

Background:

Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by motor abnormalities, mutism, and immobility.
Psychogenic catatonia is a subtype where underlying organic causes are ruled out.
Neuroleptic therapy is a common treatment, but efficacy can be variable.
