Background:

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide.
  • Cancer/Testis antigens are proteins abnormally expressed in tumors.
  • Synaptonemal complex protein 3 (SYCP3) is a Cancer/Testis antigen involved in meiosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze SYCP3 expression in breast cancer.
  • To evaluate SYCP3 as a potential breast cancer biomarker.

Main Methods:

  • SYCP3 transcript expression was quantified using Real Time RT-PCR.
  • Analysis included 47 breast tumors, 6 breast cancer cell lines, normal breast, and testis tissues.
  • REST 2009 software was used for statistical analysis.

Main Results:

  • Five out of six breast cancer cell lines exhibited high SYCP3 overexpression compared to normal breast and testis tissues (P=0.001).
  • Breast tumors showed moderately increased SYCP3 transcript levels compared to normal breast tissue.

Conclusions:

  • SYCP3, a normally testis-specific gene, is highly expressed in most breast cancer cell lines.
  • SYCP3's role in cell division and interaction with BRCA1/BRCA2 suggests its importance in breast cancer.
