Summary

Objective accommodation measurement using pattern visual evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) revealed significant attenuation in older adults and diabetics. This objective method provided higher accommodation power values compared to subjective near-point rule measurements.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To objectively measure changes in accommodation power with aging and in diabetes mellitus.
  • To compare objective accommodation measurements using VECPs with subjective near-point rule methods.

Main Methods:

  • Transient VECPs were recorded in 45 normal subjects and 32 diabetic patients.
  • Accommodation stimulus was increased in one-diopter steps using minus power lenses until VECP was unrecordable.
