Area of Science:

  • Radiation Oncology
  • Oncology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignancy.
  • Treatment options for ONB require further investigation for optimal outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of proton beam therapy (PBT) for treating olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 42 patients with ONB treated with PBT.
  • Analysis of survival rates (OS, PFS) and adverse events based on Kadish staging.
  • Patients received 65Gy (RBE) in 26 fractions, with some receiving chemotherapy.

Main Results:

  • Five-year OS rates: 100% (Kadish A), 86% (Kadish B), 76% (Kadish C).
  • Five-year PFS rates: 80% (Kadish A), 65% (Kadish B), 39% (Kadish C).
  • Grade 3-4 late adverse events occurred in 6 patients, primarily visual impairments.

Conclusions:

  • Proton beam therapy (PBT) demonstrates safety and effectiveness for olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB).
  • PBT offers favorable survival outcomes across different Kadish stages of ONB.
