Summary

Background:

  • Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive genetic disorder characterized by muscle degeneration and weakness.
  • Respiratory muscle weakness is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in DMD patients.
  • Non-invasive methods to improve respiratory function are crucial for managing DMD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of computer game-based respiratory training in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
  • To assess the impact of this intervention on respiratory muscle strength and endurance.

Main Methods:

  • Two groups of DMD patients participated in a 12-month study with a crossover design.
  • Participants used modified computer games requiring increased inspiratory effort via a mask to play.
