Oral ulceration associated with hypothyroidism. Report of a case

The case of a 62-year-old woman with idiopathic primary hypothyroidism and persistent lingual ulceration is described. The patient had no previous history of any form of oral ulceration, and the ulcers healed rapidly after treatment of the hypothyroid state. The investigation of patients with suspected hypothyroidism is discussed briefly, together with the possible theoretical mechanisms which might predispose to ulceration.
