Control and coreference in early child language.

J R Hsu, H S Cairns, S Eisenberg

    Journal of Child Language

    Summary

This study explored how children understand empty pronouns (PRO) and their connection to coreference. While PRO interpretation aligns with overt pronoun development, control and coreference restrictions develop independently in children.

    Area of Science:

    • Linguistics
    • Developmental Psychology
    • Psycholinguistics

    Background:

    • Understanding how children acquire language is crucial for developmental psychology.
    • The interpretation of empty pronouns (PRO) and their relationship to coreference is a complex area in linguistic development.
    • Previous research has identified developmental stages in children's language acquisition.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between the development of control and coreference in children.
    • To examine children's interpretation of empty pronouns (PRO) and compare it to their understanding of overt pronouns.
    • To identify distinct developmental stages in children's interpretation of PRO.

    Main Methods:

    • An act-out task was administered to 81 children (ages 3.1–8.0) and 8 adults (ages 30–55).
    • Participants' interpretations of sentences containing PRO and overt pronouns were analyzed.
    • Developmental patterns in control and coreference restrictions were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • The study replicated findings of five developmental stages in children's interpretation of PRO.
    • A significant relationship was found between children's interpretation of sentences with PRO and those with overt pronouns.
    • No relationship was observed between the development of restrictions on control and restrictions on coreference.

    Conclusions:

    • Children's interpretation of empty pronouns (PRO) follows developmental stages that parallel the acquisition of overt pronouns.
    • The development of control and coreference restrictions in children's language processing appears to be independent.
    • These findings contribute to understanding the complex nature of syntactic development and semantic interpretation in children.
