Background:

  • This study establishes baseline trauma service workload and mortality at KCH prior to helipad operationalization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish baseline workload and mortality measures for trauma services at King's College Hospital.
  • To provide data for future evaluation of the impact of a new helipad on trauma care.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 427 major trauma patients with helicopter emergency medical services involvement admitted to KCH between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2015.
  • Data sourced from the Trauma Audit and Research Network database.

Main Results:

  • Median Injury Severity Score was 22; median length of stay was 11 days, with 57% admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for a median of 5 days.
  • No significant differences in Injury Severity Score, length of stay, or ICU length of stay were observed between 2014 and 2015.
  • 45.2% of patients underwent surgery, totaling 1,276.5 operating room hours; survival outcomes did not differ significantly between the two years.

Conclusions:

  • Baseline workload and mortality data were successfully established.
  • These findings serve as a foundation for future assessments of the helipad's impact on trauma service efficiency and patient outcomes.
