Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology

Background:

Tonsillectomy is a common pediatric surgical procedure.
The optimal extent of tonsil removal (partial vs. total) remains debated.
Varied definitions and techniques complicate comparisons.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the effectiveness of partial versus total tonsillectomy in children.
To analyze outcomes including recovery, symptom persistence, and complications.

Main Methods:

Systematic review of 16 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from 1980-2016.
Independent data screening, extraction, and risk of bias assessment.
Qualitative synthesis due to heterogeneity.

Main Results:

Partial tonsillectomy showed faster return to normal diet/activity in most studies.
Partial removal was associated with increased throat infections and tonsillar regrowth (6%).
No significant differences observed in obstructive symptom persistence or quality of life.

Conclusions:

Evidence is insufficient for definitive conclusions on partial vs. total tonsillectomy benefits.
Partial tonsillectomy offers some recovery advantages but carries risks of regrowth and recurrence.
Heterogeneity in study design and definitions limits comparative analysis.
