Summary

The EQ-5D tool is a feasible and acceptable measure for assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in systemic sclerosis patients. It demonstrates good construct validity, making it suitable for clinical practice and research.

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis is a disabling condition causing significant physical and psychological impairment.
  • Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is often overlooked in systemic sclerosis clinical practice and research.
  • Existing HRQoL tools like SF-36 are comprehensive but complex, while HAQ focuses solely on physical disability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and construct validity of the EQ-5D questionnaire in systemic sclerosis patients.
  • To compare the performance of EQ-5D with established tools such as SF-36 and HAQ.
  • To determine if EQ-5D is a suitable measure for routine use in systemic sclerosis care.

Main Methods:

  • 119 systemic sclerosis patients from three rheumatology centers participated.
  • Feasibility was assessed by the rate of missing data and need for assistance.
  • Acceptability was gauged through patient comments.
  • Construct validity was examined by comparing EQ-5D domains with corresponding SF-36 and HAQ domains.

Main Results:

  • EQ-5D showed good patient acceptance with only 2.5% missing data.
  • Moderate to strong correlations were found between comparable EQ-5D, SF-36, and HAQ domains.

Conclusions:

  • The EQ-5D is a well-accepted, feasible, and valid tool for measuring HRQoL in systemic sclerosis.
  • Its simplicity and effectiveness support its use in clinical practice, clinical trials, and pharmacoeconomic evaluations for systemic sclerosis.
  • EQ-5D offers a valuable alternative for assessing the holistic well-being of patients with systemic sclerosis.
