  • To investigate if the introduction of e-cigarettes in 2007 altered the trend of youth cigarette smoking.
  • To assess the likelihood of e-cigarette-only users initiating tobacco use with cigarettes.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized nationally representative school-based survey data from 2004-2014 (National Youth Tobacco Surveys).
  • Employed interrupted time series analysis to examine trends in youth cigarette smoking before and after 2007.
  • Applied a psychosocial smoking model to estimate smoking probability in e-cigarette users.

Main Results:

  • Youth cigarette smoking showed a consistent linear decrease from 2004 to 2014.
  • No significant change in the smoking decline trend was observed after e-cigarette introduction in 2007.
  • A small percentage (<25%) of e-cigarette-only users were categorized as current smokers by the psychosocial model.

Conclusions:

  • E-cigarette introduction was not associated with a change in the declining trend of youth cigarette smoking.
