Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between tooth agenesis and other dental anomalies in children and adolescents.
  • To identify specific dental anomalies frequently co-occurring with tooth agenesis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of panoramic radiographs from 195 subjects with tooth agenesis (excluding third molars) and 600 controls.
  • Ages ranged from 7 to 15 years.
  • Panoramic and periapical radiographs assessed associated dental anomalies.

Main Results:

  • Tooth agenesis was significantly associated with microdontia of maxillary lateral incisors (17.7%), distoangulation of mandibular second premolars (6.5%), delayed permanent tooth development (10.8%), and primary molar hypo-occlusion (11.8%).
  • Supernumerary teeth were more prevalent in controls; no difference in ectopic first molar eruption.
  • Anterior/premolar agenesis correlated with maxillary lateral incisor microdontia; premolar agenesis linked to distoangulation, delayed development, and primary molar hypo-occlusion.

Conclusions:

  • Small maxillary lateral incisors, distoangulation of mandibular second premolars, delayed tooth development, and primary molar hypo-occlusion are frequently associated with tooth agenesis.
  • These findings support a genetic interrelationship in the etiology of these dental anomalies.
