Summary

Carotid artery dissection can cause vision loss. This study highlights two cases where permanent ocular strokes led to the diagnosis of internal carotid artery vasculopathy.

Background:

  • Carotid artery dissection is a known cause of transient visual disturbances.
  • Ocular complications, such as stroke, are less commonly reported sequelae.

Observation:

  • Two patients presented with permanent vision loss.
  • Both patients had evidence of internal carotid artery dissection.

Findings:

  • The permanent ocular vaso-occlusive events were consequent to internal carotid artery dissection.
  • In both cases, the ocular strokes were instrumental in identifying the underlying carotid artery disease.

Implications:

  • This highlights the potential for severe, permanent ocular complications from carotid dissection.
