Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Thyroid nodules are common, and differentiating benign from malignant types is crucial for patient management.
  • Accurate diagnosis of thyroid nodules impacts treatment decisions and patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of strain elastography in differentiating benign and malignant thyroid nodules.
  • To assess the role of strain elastography in identifying patients who may benefit from surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Gray-scale ultrasound, Doppler characteristics, and strain elastography were used to evaluate 293 thyroid nodules.
  • Nodules were classified into four patterns based on elastographic findings.
  • Cytopathological results served as the gold standard for diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Malignancy risk increased with hypoechogenicity, microcalcification, absent halo, and central vascularity.
  • Strain elastography patterns 3 and 4 indicated malignancy, while patterns 1 and 2 indicated benignity.
  • Elastography demonstrated 100% sensitivity, 80.2% specificity, and 85% accuracy in distinguishing malignant from benign nodules.

Conclusions:

  • Strain elastography is a valuable noninvasive tool for diagnosing thyroid nodules.
  • This technique can assist in surgical decision-making for patients with thyroid nodules.
