    Summary

    Ureaplasma urealyticum, a common mycoplasma, was significantly more prevalent in men with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) compared to controls. This finding suggests Ureaplasma urealyticum plays a role in NGU pathogenesis.

    • To investigate the prevalence of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis in heterosexual males with NGU compared to age-matched controls.
    • To determine the association between Ureaplasma urealyticum and NGU.

    • A total of 692 heterosexual males were studied, including 130 with NGU and 562 controls.
    • Mycoplasmas were cultivated using liquid PPLO medium.

    • These findings support the role of Ureaplasma urealyticum as a causative agent in NGU.
