Area of Science:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biosensor Technology
  • Food Safety

Background:

  • Multianalyte methods are crucial for reducing analysis time and cost in mycotoxin detection.
  • Current methods often require separate analyses for different mycotoxins, increasing inefficiency.
  • There is a growing need for parallel analysis of multiple mycotoxins in food matrices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a biosensor for the parallel determination of four major mycotoxins.
  • To utilize regenerable glass microchips for enhanced biosensor reusability.
  • To implement a fully automated flow-through system with chemiluminescence detection.

Main Methods:

  • An indirect competitive immunoassay format was employed.
  • Regenerable, reusable glass microchips served as the biosensor platform.
  • A fully automated flow-through device with chemiluminescence readout was utilized for parallel analysis of aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, deoxynivalenol, and fumonisin B1 in oat extracts.

Main Results:

  • The biosensor successfully enabled parallel determination of the target mycotoxins.
  • The use of regenerable microchips demonstrated reusability, contributing to cost-effectiveness.
  • The automated flow-through system provided efficient and rapid analysis of oat extracts.

Conclusions:

  • The developed biosensor offers a promising tool for the simultaneous and automated detection of multiple mycotoxins in food.
  • This approach significantly improves efficiency and reduces costs compared to single-analyte methods.
  • The technology is suitable for routine monitoring of mycotoxin contamination in food safety applications.
