A 76-year-old man was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, a rare form of male breast cancer. Treatment involved mastectomy, lymph node dissection, and tamoxifen, with no recurrence after 4 months.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Radiology
- Pathology
Background:
- Male breast carcinoma is rare, accounting for about 1% of all breast cancers.
- The typical presentation is a painless, hard nodule, often under the nipple.
- Treatment protocols for male breast cancer mirror those for female breast cancer.
Observation:
- A 76-year-old man presented with a palpable tumor under his right nipple.
- Imaging studies (mammography, ultrasonography, MRI) revealed an irregularly shaped nodule with skin invasion.
- Core needle biopsy confirmed invasive ductal carcinoma.
Findings:
- Histopathology identified scirrhous carcinoma, a subtype of invasive ductal carcinoma.
- The tumor was estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PgR) positive, with a HER2 score of 1 and a Ki-67 index of 20-30%.
- The patient underwent mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection.
Implications:
- Adjuvant therapy with tamoxifen was administered post-surgery.
- The patient showed no evidence of recurrence 4 months after treatment.
- This case highlights the importance of early detection and appropriate management of male breast cancer.
