Summary

Obstructive jaundice impairs kidney function, increasing prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and angiotensin II (AII). Drainage improves these levels, suggesting PGE2 supports renal circulation in jaundice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between urinary prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), renal function, and the renin-angiotensin (R-A) system in patients with obstructive jaundice.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 12 patients with obstructive jaundice before and after percutaneous biliary drainage.
  • Measured urinary PGE2, 6-keto PGF1 alpha, thromboxane (TXB2), creatinine clearance (CCr), and plasma angiotensin II (AII).
  • Analyzed correlations between these parameters.

Main Results:

  • Before drainage, patients had lower CCr and higher PGE2 and AII levels compared to normal subjects.
