Background:

Patient involvement in care planning can enhance patient safety and health outcomes.
A knowledge gap exists regarding factors influencing patient engagement in individualized treatment plans.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe patient perceptions of their involvement in creating and implementing treatment plans.
To identify demographic and medical factors associated with patient involvement in care.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional analysis of the 2008 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Quality of Care module.
Participants were individuals aged over 50 years.
Statistical analyses included one-way ANOVAs and linear regression to identify predictors of patient involvement.

Main Results:

Overall patient involvement scores averaged approximately 50% across shared decision-making, counseling, and follow-up domains.
Non-White race, older age, and diagnoses of psychiatric conditions or diabetes predicted higher self-reported involvement.
Predictors of increased patient involvement in treatment plan development and communication were identified.

Conclusions:

Patient involvement in care is generally low across demographic groups.
Age, race, and specific medical conditions (diabetes, psychiatric disorders) significantly influence patient involvement.
Further research is warranted to explore the impact of patient involvement on health outcomes.
