Summary

Faecal impaction, a growing concern in the elderly, can cause severe symptoms. Prompt diagnosis and endoscopic treatment of faecoliths are crucial for patient recovery.

Area of Science:

Background:

  • Faecal impaction is increasingly prevalent, particularly in the elderly population.
  • Inadequate detection and treatment can lead to severe complications including diarrhea, incontinence, anorexia, vomiting, rectal ulcers, and bowel perforation.

Observation:

  • Two cases of serious, uncommon complications of faecolithiasis are presented.
  • Patient A, an elderly woman with dementia, experienced worsening cognitive symptoms and faecal incontinence.
  • Patient B, a younger woman, presented with urinary retention, abdominal pain, and constipation, mimicking a pelvic tumor.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography (CT) scans in both patients revealed no abnormalities.
  • Neither patient responded to standard oral laxative therapy.
  • Faecoliths were eventually diagnosed and successfully treated via endoscopic fragmentation.
