Abstract:
Six children aged 7-11 years were operated in the Paediatric Cardio-centre in Prague Motol in 1965-1987 on account of atresia of the tricuspid valve. Fontan's operation in Doty's modification was performed which involves the establishment of a wide direct connection between the right atrium and the pulmonary artery without the use of valves or a conduit. The authors describe the technique of the operation and indication criteria which must be met, if the operation is to be successful. Fontan's operation is useful also in other types of complex heart disease with a single ventricle and low pulmonary vascular resistance.
