Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Crohn's disease often necessitates small intestine resection due to strictures.
  • Multiple or scattered strictures pose a challenge, risking short bowel syndrome.
  • Stricturoplasty offers a method to preserve intestinal length.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of stricturoplasty using automatic staplers in managing Crohn's disease strictures.
  • To assess the potential of this technique in preventing intestinal resection and short bowel syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of patients undergoing stricturoplasty for Crohn's disease.
  • Utilization of automatic staplers for the stricturoplasty procedure.
  • Documentation of the number of strictures treated and patient outcomes.

Main Results:

  • The study successfully treated 30 strictures in nine patients using automatic staplers.
  • The technique demonstrated excellent results in managing intestinal strictures.
  • Preservation of small intestine length was achieved, avoiding resection.

Conclusions:

  • Stricturoplasty with automatic staplers is an effective technique for Crohn's disease.
  • This approach successfully preserves small intestine length and prevents short bowel syndrome.
  • The use of automatic staplers facilitates excellent outcomes in stricturoplasty procedures.
