The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. Summary

Anterior ankle snapping syndrome can now be treated with arthroscopic taloplasty. This new technique addresses snapping caused by a prominent talar head, offering a novel solution for this rare condition.

Background:

Anterior ankle snapping syndrome is a rare condition.
Previously reported causes include extensor digitorum longus snapping and peroneal tertius muscle issues.
A novel mechanism involving a hypertrophied talar head has been identified.

Purpose of the Study:

To report a new mechanism of anterolateral ankle snapping caused by a hypertrophied talar head.
To describe the technique of arthroscopic taloplasty for treating this condition.

Main Methods:

Anterolateral ankle snapping is elicited by active ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion with foot inversion.
Foot inversion tensions the inferior extensor retinaculum, exposing the talar head prominence.
The technique involves arthroscopic contouring of the talar head via extra-articular ankle arthroscopy.
