Further Evidence for the Mediating role of Learning in the "Mere Exposure" Phenomenon
1a Western Illinois University , USA.
Abstract:
The effect of the position of a nonsense word within a serial list on the affective meaning attributed the word was studied. A one-way analysis of variance conducted on the rated goodness measures provided by 32 female Ss shows that serial position had a significant effect (p < .01). The first and last serial positions were rated to have the most positive meanings, with the data for the remaining positions corresponding to the serial position curve typically found for recall data. A trend analysis reveals that the only significant component is the quadratic trend (p < .01). It is concluded that the data support the hypothesis that learning mediates the well-documented relationship between frequency of exposure and affect.

Cognitive Learning
E. C. Tolman's theory of purposive behavior emphasizes that much behavior is goal-directed. He argued that to understand behavior, we must look at the entire sequence of actions leading to a goal. For instance, high school students study hard, not just due to past reinforcement but also to achieve the goal of getting into a good college.
Tolman introduced the idea that behavior is influenced by...
Observational Learning
Avoidance Learning and Learned Helplessness
Avoidance learning occurs when an organism learns that a specific behavior can prevent an unpleasant outcome. For example, a student who receives a bad grade may start studying harder to avoid future poor grades. This behavior persists even when the negative outcome is no longer present. Avoidance learning is powerful because it maintains behavior in the absence of the...
