Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Orthodontics
  • Computer-Aided Diagnosis

Background:

  • Cephalometric analysis is crucial for orthodontic treatment planning and monitoring.
  • Manual cephalometric measurements are time-consuming, tedious, and prone to human error.
  • Existing automated systems lack comprehensive evaluation of reliability, performance, and usability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel automated cephalometric system, Ceph-X.
  • To assess the reliability, performance, and usability of Ceph-X using established metrics.
  • To compare the automated approach with manual cephalometric measurements.

Main Methods:

  • Developed Ceph-X using image processing techniques: image enhancement, landmark localization, and computation models.
  • Evaluated Ceph-X using X-ray images from 30 subjects.
  • Assessed accuracy and performance with 3 orthodontic specialists; usability and satisfaction with 20 specialists using the System Usability Scale (SUS).

Main Results:

  • Ceph-X achieved high accuracy (approx. 96.6%) with minimal error ( < 0.5 mm, 1°).
  • The system significantly improved specialist performance and reduced processing time for cephalometric measurements.
  • SUS analysis indicated excellent usability and user satisfaction with Ceph-X.

Conclusions:

  • Ceph-X demonstrates proven reliability, performance, and usability for orthodontic cephalometric analysis.
  • The system offers a valuable tool for orthodontists in diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Automated cephalometric analysis with Ceph-X enhances efficiency and accuracy in orthodontic practice.
