Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics
  • Patient Satisfaction

Background:

  • Patient satisfaction with complete dentures is crucial for successful outcomes.
  • Understanding factors influencing satisfaction is key to improving denture therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate relationships between esthetic satisfaction and patient age, sex, and expectations.
  • To analyze esthetic outcomes of complete denture therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary data analysis of 4 studies on complete denture satisfaction.
  • Utilized visual analog scales for esthetic expectations and satisfaction.
  • Employed various statistical tests including Sign test, Fisher exact, Spearman rank correlation, Wilcoxon rank sum, Kruskal-Wallis, and Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel tests.

Main Results:

  • 283 participants (52% female, median age 58) showed satisfaction scores significantly higher than expectation scores.
  • Age, sex, and expectations varied across studies; age differed between sexes.
  • Men reported higher expectations than women, with satisfaction positively correlated with expectations only in men.

Conclusions:

  • Patients generally experienced greater esthetic satisfaction than anticipated post-denture therapy.
  • Esthetic satisfaction was independent of patient age and sex.
  • Men's higher expectations were positively linked to their satisfaction levels.
