Personality differences between genders may explain why women with Lichen Simplex Chronicus (LSC) experience chronic scratching. Specific traits in women contribute to scratching severity, offering new research and treatment avenues.

Background:

Chronic scratching is a common symptom across various skin disorders.
Female gender and high psychopathology are identified risk factors for chronic scratching.
Personality traits influencing emotional states may underlie gender differences in scratching.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if specific personality styles explain the association between gender, emotional distress, and chronic scratching.
To explore the role of personality in Lichen Simplex Chronicus (LSC).

Main Methods:

Compared personality patterns of 103 patients with LSC (69.9% women) to a healthy control group.
Utilized statistical analysis to identify significant differences in personality styles.

Main Results:

Significant personality differences were observed between men and women with LSC.
Women with LSC exhibited higher pessimism, other-orientation, traditionalism, insecurity, submissiveness, and reservation.
Some personality differences, like traditionalism and pessimism, were also noted when comparing LSC patients to healthy individuals.

Conclusions:

Psychological factors, particularly personality traits, may elucidate gender disparities in chronic scratching, specifically in LSC.
Findings suggest potential for novel research directions and therapeutic interventions targeting personality factors.
