Cotrimoxazole Resistant Chancroid.

    Summary

    Chancroid infections in young men proved resistant to common antibiotics like cotrimoxazole and tetracycline. Chloramphenicol effectively treated these resistant chancroid cases without side effects.

    Background:

    • Chancroid is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Haemophilus ducreyi.
    • Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern in treating sexually transmitted infections.
    • Cotrimoxazole and tetracycline are commonly used antibiotics for chancroid treatment.

    Observation:

    • Four young adult males presented with clinically typical chancroid following exposure.
    • The chancroid infections were unresponsive to treatment with cotrimoxazole alone.
    • The infections also showed resistance to a combination of cotrimoxazole and tetracycline.

    Findings:

    • Chloramphenicol demonstrated rapid and complete efficacy in treating the resistant chancroid cases.
    • No adverse side effects were observed during chloramphenicol treatment.
