Summary

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) effectively treats biliary tract obstructions. A large-diameter stent placed via ERCP rapidly resolved a patient's cutaneous bile fistula.

Background:

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a key endoscopic procedure for diagnosing and treating biliary and pancreatic duct diseases.
Therapeutic ERCP allows for the placement of endobiliary prostheses (stents) to manage biliary obstructions.
Large-diameter stents have improved the efficacy of endoscopic management for complex biliary lesions.

Observation:

A patient presented with a challenging cutaneous bile fistula, a complication involving bile leakage to the skin surface.
Conservative management had not resolved the fistula.
The patient underwent ERCP for stent placement.

Findings:

A large-diameter endobiliary prosthesis was successfully placed during the ERCP procedure.
The cutaneous bile fistula showed a remarkable and rapid response to the intervention.
Complete resolution of the bile fistula was observed overnight following the endoscopic treatment.

Implications:

This case highlights the significant therapeutic potential of large-diameter endobiliary prostheses in managing complex biliary complications like fistulas.
ERCP with large stent placement offers a minimally invasive and effective treatment option for biliary leaks.
The findings support the expanded role of interventional endoscopy in resolving challenging hepatobiliary conditions.
