Obedience01:08

Obedience

35.7K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Milgram's Obedience to Authority02:20

Milgram's Obedience to Authority

7.5K
Obedience to authority is classically demonstrated in a more famous series of social psychology experiments performed by Stanley Milgram. He was a social psychology professor at Yale who was influenced by the trial of Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi war criminal. Eichmann’s defense for the atrocities he committed was that he was “just following orders.”

Persuasion Strategies01:52

Persuasion Strategies

43.8K
Researchers have tested many persuasion strategies, including the foot-in-the door and the door-in-the-face techniques, in a variety of contexts. Ultimately, the principles are effective in selling products and changing people’s attitude, ideas, and behaviors (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).

Deviation from Ideal Behaviour01:23

Deviation from Ideal Behaviour

32
Real gases do not perfectly obey the ideal gas laws, especially at high pressures and low temperatures or when they are about to condense to a liquid. These deviations occur due to intermolecular forces between gas molecules. Repulsive forces aid expansion and are significant when molecules are very close together, typically at high pressure. Attractive forces assist compression and have a longer range, being effective over several molecular diameters. They become significant when molecules are...

Cognitive Dissonance01:38

Cognitive Dissonance

37.7K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Conformity01:20

Conformity

48.3K
Conformity is the change in a person’s behavior to go along with the group, even if that person does not agree with the group.

Summary

Peer counselors in campus alcohol interventions did not change their drinking habits. However, mandated students significantly reduced alcohol consumption, suggesting actions matter more than the facilitator's behavior.

Area of Science:

  • Addiction Research
  • Public Health Interventions
  • Peer Education

Background:

  • Campus alcohol interventions often utilize peer facilitators.
  • Limited understanding exists regarding the drinking behaviors and perceptions of these peer facilitators.
  • Investigating peer facilitator trajectories is crucial for optimizing intervention effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the drinking behaviors and perceptions of peer counselors delivering personalized normative feedback.
  • To understand how facilitating alcohol interventions impacts peer counselors over time.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study involving 12 peer counselors.
  • Monthly self-assessments of drinking behaviors and expectancies over four months.
  • Intervention involved personalized normative feedback for mandated undergraduates.

Main Results:

  • Peer counselors' drinking behaviors and expectancies remained largely unchanged.
  • Peer counselors corrected overestimates of binge drinking but underestimated abstinence norms.
  • Significant individual differences (between-subjects effects) in trajectories were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Peer facilitator's personal drinking behaviors may not directly influence intervention outcomes.
  • Mandated clients significantly reduced drinking despite no change in peer facilitator behavior.
  • The "Do as I Say" principle may be more impactful than "Do as I Do" in campus alcohol interventions.
