Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if serum albumin reduction within 2 days post-surgery predicts complications after colorectal surgery.

  • Retrospective study of 626 patients undergoing major colorectal surgery.
  • Univariate, multivariate analyses, and ROC curves to identify risk factors and predict complications.
  • Evaluated the change in serum albumin (Δalbumin) compared to preoperative levels.

  • A median Δalbumin of 15% was observed.
  • Δalbumin ≥15% was an independent predictor of overall postoperative complications (p < 0.01).
  • Patients with Δalbumin ≥15% had more major complications, higher complication index, longer stays, and increased surgical site infections.

  • A 15% reduction in serum albumin within 2 days post-surgery can identify patients at high risk for complications.
  • This marker facilitates safe and early discharge planning after colorectal surgery.
