Biotechnology is multidisciplinary in nature and affects a variety of industry sectors. Often, the success of biotechnology ventures depends on strategic alliances. However, up to now, with few exceptions, the only major products based on modern biotechnology that have been commercialized have been pharmaceutical ones, and that trend is likely to continue. Although some of the early promises of the bioindustry have been fulfilled, many more have yet to be substantiated.
