Predator-Prey Interactions02:39

Predator-Prey Interactions

22.0K
Predators consume prey for energy. Predators that acquire prey and prey that avoid predation both increase their chances of survival and reproduction (i.e., fitness). Routine predator-prey interactions elicit mutual adaptations that improve predator offenses, such as claws, teeth, and speed, as well as prey defenses, including crypsis, aposematism, and mimicry. Thus, predator-prey interactions resemble an evolutionary arms race.

Threats to Biodiversity01:50

Threats to Biodiversity

27.6K
There have been five major extinction events throughout geological history, resulting in the elimination of biodiversity, followed by a rebound of species that adapted to the new conditions. In the current geological epoch, the Holocene, there is a sixth extinction event in progress. This mass extinction has been attributed to human activities and is thus provisionally called the Anthropocene. In 2019 the human population reached 7.7 billion people and is projected to comprise 10 billion by...

Journal Bearings01:23

Journal Bearings

1.3K
Journal bearings are mechanical components that support and provide lateral stability to rotating shafts and axles. They are crucial in reducing friction, wear, and vibration in machinery such as engines, turbines, and pumps. The principle behind journal bearings is forming a thin lubricant film between the bearing surface and the rotating shaft, which minimizes direct contact and reduces frictional forces.
To better understand the concept of journal bearings, consider a rope winch with dry or...

Frequency-dependent Selection01:21

Frequency-dependent Selection

24.4K
When the fitness of a trait is influenced by how common it is (i.e., its frequency) relative to different traits within a population, this is referred to as frequency-dependent selection. Frequency-dependent selection may occur between species or within a single species. This type of selection can either be positive—with more common phenotypes having higher fitness—or negative, with rarer phenotypes conferring increased fitness.

Feedback Inhibition00:46

Feedback Inhibition

58.2K
Biochemical reactions are occurring constantly in cells, converting starting substances to different products, usually with the help of enzymes that speed the reactions. Without enzymes, it would take far too long for most reactions to occur to be useful to the cell!

Symbiosis00:58

Symbiosis

37.9K
Symbiotic relationships are long-term, close interactions between individuals of different species that affect the distribution and abundance of those species. When a relationship is beneficial to both species, this is called mutualism. When the relationship is beneficial to one species but neither beneficial nor harmful to the other species, this is called commensalism. When one organism is harmed to benefit another, the relationship is known as parasitism. These types of relationships often...

Summary

Predatory journal spam is a significant issue for physicians and researchers. This study analyzed spam emails, finding that invitations to publish in predatory journals were the most frequent type received.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Research
  • Scholarly Publishing

Background:

  • Physicians and academic researchers receive numerous spam emails.
  • Predatory journals solicit manuscripts, posing a threat to scholarly integrity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the nature and frequency of spam invitations to submit manuscripts to predatory journals.

Main Methods:

  • A 3-month collection of spam emails received by an academic medical oncologist.
  • Categorization of spam emails.
  • Analysis of presumed predatory journal invitations against Beall's list.

Main Results:

  • Invitations to submit to predatory journals constituted the most common category of spam received.
  • The study provides insights into the tactics used by predatory publishers.

Conclusions:

  • Predatory journal solicitations represent a prevalent form of spam targeting medical professionals.
  • Awareness and identification of such predatory practices are crucial for researchers.
