    Summary

    Detecting acute HIV infection (AHI) early is crucial. Newer tests can identify the virus within days, overcoming the limitations of traditional antibody tests during the critical window period.

    Background:

    • Acute HIV infection (AHI) is a critical early phase of HIV disease.
    • Characterized by aggressive viral replication in lymphoid tissues and high viral loads.
    • Leads to declining lymphocyte counts, particularly CD4+ T-cells.

    Observation:

    • AHI patients are often unaware of their infection but highly infectious.
    • Traditional antibody detection tests have a significant "window period" (3-4 weeks), leading to false negatives.
    • Early detection is challenging due to the limitations of antibody-based testing.

    Findings:

    • Fourth-generation antibody-antigen tests and nucleic acid polymerase chain reaction (NA-PCR) offer earlier detection.
    • These advanced methods can detect HIV infection as early as 5-7 days post-exposure.
