The innovation of touch-tone telephony revolutionized the telecommunications industry by replacing the traditional rotary dial with a dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling system. This system uses a matrix-style keypad with buttons arranged in four rows and three columns, creating 12 distinct signals each assigned to a pair of frequencies. Each button press results in a simultaneous generation of two sinusoidal tones – one from a low-frequency group (697 to 941 Hz) and one from a...

Persuasion Strategies

43.8K
Researchers have tested many persuasion strategies, including the foot-in-the door and the door-in-the-face techniques, in a variety of contexts. Ultimately, the principles are effective in selling products and changing people’s attitude, ideas, and behaviors (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).

Dose-Response Relationship: Selectivity and Specificity

10.3K
Drugs exert their therapeutic effects by interacting with receptors, enzymes, or ion channels that are present throughout the human body. The strength and duration of the interaction between a drug and its target receptor are characterized by the selectivity and specificity of the drug. Selectivity refers to a drug's strong preference for its intended target over other targets. For instance, isoprenaline, a non-selective β-adrenergic agonist, interacts with both β1- and...

Electro-mechanical Systems01:19

Electro-mechanical Systems

1.8K
Electromechanical systems are intricate configurations that effectively combine electrical and mechanical elements to achieve a desired outcome. Central to many of these systems is the DC motor, a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical motion, enabling various applications ranging from simple fans to complex robotic mechanisms.
A key component of the DC motor is the armature, a rotating circuit positioned within a magnetic field. As an electric current passes through the...

Summary

Electronic Request Forms (ERFs) reduced clinically relevant information for placental histopathology, decreasing data quality compared to dedicated placental request forms (DPRF). This impacts specimen handling and clinicopathological correlation.

Area of Science:

  • Pathology
  • Clinical Informatics
  • Healthcare Quality Improvement

Context:

  • Mater Pathology Services implemented a dedicated placental request form (DPRF) in 2009, enhancing clinical information for histopathology.
  • Electronic Request Forms (ERFs) replaced the DPRF campus-wide in 2011.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the effect of Electronic Request Forms (ERFs) on the quantity of clinical information accompanying placental specimens for histopathology.
  • To compare ERF data completeness with DPRF and standard pathology request forms.

Summary:

  • Histopathology request forms for placentas were analyzed for clinically relevant information.
  • ERF use resulted in a significant decrease in useful clinical information compared to DPRF (1.3 vs. 2.6 items).
  • Clinical information provided with ERFs reverted to pre-DPRF levels.

Impact:

  • ERFs may reduce errors but negatively impact the provision of essential clinical data.
  • Reduced clinical information can hinder appropriate specimen handling, pathology reporting, and clinicopathological correlation.
  • This study highlights potential unintended consequences of electronic form implementation on clinical data quality.
