Summary

The MMP-9 (-1562) C/C genotype is more common in patients with pituitary adenoma (PA), suggesting it may influence PA development. This genotype was also linked to noninvasive, invasive, nonrecurrent, and inactive PA subtypes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the MMP-9 genotype and the development of pituitary adenoma.
  • To determine if specific MMP-9 genotypes correlate with PA subtypes or clinical characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Case-control study including 86 PA patients and 526 healthy controls.
  • MMP-9 genotyping performed using real-time polymerase chain reaction.
  • Statistical analysis to compare genotype frequencies between groups.

Main Results:

  • The MMP-9 (-1562) C/C genotype was significantly more frequent in PA patients (81.4%) compared to controls (64.6%).
  • This association held true for PA females, noninvasive, invasive, nonrecurrent, and inactive PA subgroups.
  • The C/C genotype was also more prevalent in inactive PA compared to active PA.

Conclusions:

  • The MMP-9 (-1562) C/C genotype is associated with an increased risk of pituitary adenoma development.
  • This genotype may play a role in the pathogenesis of various PA subtypes, including invasive, noninvasive, nonrecurrent, and inactive forms.
