Tumor Immunotherapy01:27

Tumor Immunotherapy

2.1K
Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Hematology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL), nasal type, is a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • It is frequently observed in East Asian populations and linked to Epstein-Barr virus infection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively analyze nine cases of ENKTL, nasal type, diagnosed and treated at a single center.
  • To describe the clinical presentation, immunophenotype, treatment, response, and toxicity profile of these cases.
  • To investigate the potential endemicity of ENKTL in Bhutan.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series analysis of nine patients with ENKTL, nasal type.
  • Review of clinical data, including patient demographics, presenting symptoms, site of involvement, and histological features.
  • Analysis of treatment regimens (chemotherapy and radiotherapy) and patient outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Sino-nasal symptoms were the predominant presenting complaints in 8 out of 9 cases.
  • Histological examination revealed necrosis and angiocentricity as common features.
  • A significant proportion of cases (67%) were referred from Bhutan, suggesting a potential endemic link.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest that Bhutan may be an endemic region for ENKTL, nasal type.
  • Further epidemiological studies are warranted to confirm the endemicity and understand risk factors.
  • This study contributes to the understanding of ENKTL management in a non-East Asian referral population.
