Summary

This study found that global longitudinal strain, an echocardiographic measure, strongly correlates with maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in soccer referees. This suggests it could be a key indicator for assessing referee cardiovascular fitness and performance.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Sports Medicine
  • Exercise Physiology

Background:

  • Assessing soccer referee performance is crucial and often involves cardiac imaging.
  • Previous studies have explored various cardiovascular parameters in athletes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and echocardiographic parameters in soccer referees.
  • To identify specific echocardiographic markers predictive of referee performance.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 20 soccer referees from the Italian Soccer Referees' Association.
  • Cardiovascular profiling including VO2max assessment.
  • Echocardiographic analysis using speckle tracking to measure global longitudinal strain and conventional indices (e.g., ejection fraction, LV indexed mass).

Main Results:

  • A strong direct relationship was observed between VO2max and left ventricular global longitudinal strain (R²=0.8464).
  • Conventional echocardiographic indices showed weaker correlations with VO2max (e.g., ejection fraction R²=0.4444; LV indexed mass R²=0.2268).

Conclusions:

  • Global longitudinal strain, assessed via speckle tracking echocardiography, is a significant predictor of VO2max in soccer referees.
  • Longitudinal strain may serve as a specific echocardiographic parameter for evaluating soccer referee performance and cardiovascular fitness.
