    Summary

    Neurokinin A (NKA) is a potent bronchoconstrictive agent in guinea pigs, found in lung tissue and nerves. These findings suggest NKA acts as a neurotransmitter in noncholinergic bronchoconstrictive nerves.

    Background:

    • Substance P (SP) is a known mediator of noncholinergic bronchoconstriction.
    • The roles of related tachykinins, Neurokinin A (NKA) and Neurokinin B (NKB), in airway function are less understood.

    • To compare the bronchoconstrictive potencies of NKA, NKB, and SP in guinea pig airways.
    • To determine the endogenous levels and distribution of NKA and NKB in guinea pig lung tissue.
