Subacute polyradiculopathy with optic and auditory nerve involvement.

H S Pall, A C Williams

    Archives of Neurology
    |August 1, 1987
    PubMed
    Summary

Two patients developed acute polyradiculopathy and central nervous system demyelination after viral infections. This rare syndrome combined features of Guillain-Barré syndrome with central nervous system involvement.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Neuroimmunology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Viral infections can trigger a range of neurological complications.
    • Guillain-Barré syndrome is an autoimmune disorder affecting peripheral nerves.
    • Central nervous system demyelination affects the brain and spinal cord.

    Observation:

    • Two patients presented with acute polyradiculopathy affecting all four limbs.
    • Severe optic and auditory nerve involvement was noted in both patients.
    • Additional central nervous system signs indicated widespread neurological dysfunction.

    Findings:

    • The patients exhibited a unique syndrome combining features of Guillain-Barré syndrome.
    • Simultaneous acute demyelination within the central nervous system was observed.
    • This suggests a complex immune-mediated response to a preceding viral illness.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights a rare, severe neurological complication following viral infections.
    • Understanding this syndrome may improve diagnosis and treatment of post-viral neurological disorders.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the specific mechanisms involved in this combined presentation.
