Background:

Professional actors have historically been used in medical education to simulate patient interactions.
Experienced General Practice (GP) trainers require effective tools for skills development, particularly in managing difficult consultations.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of using GP trainees as role-players compared to professional actors for training experienced GP trainers.
To assess the perceived realism, adaptability, and educational benefit of using GP trainees in a simulated training environment.

Main Methods:

A residential course for experienced GP trainers was conducted.
Local ST3 GP trainees were recruited to role-play patients with challenging characteristics.
Post-course feedback was collected through immediate written evaluations and online questionnaires.

Main Results:

GP trainees were rated by delegates as a more effective, adaptable, and realistic training tool than professional actors.
The use of GP trainees provided significant educational benefits for both the trainers and the trainees involved in the role-playing exercise.

Conclusions:

GP trainees can serve as a highly effective substitute for professional actors in training experienced GP trainers.
This approach enhances the authenticity and realism of communication skills training in General Practice.
