Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation01:13

Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation

1.1K
Insufficient sleep refers to not getting the recommended amount of sleep for optimal functioning, even if it's just slightly less than needed. Sleep insufficiency may occur due to lifestyle choices, such as staying up late for social events or work, resulting in routinely getting less sleep than required. For example, consistently sleeping 6 hours when the body needs 7-9 hours can lead to cumulative effects on health and well-being.
Sleep deprivation is a more severe form of sleep loss...

Sleep Apnea01:21

Sleep Apnea

670
Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing stops intermittently during sleep, often leading to significant health issues. Each episode can last from 10 to 20 seconds or more and is frequently accompanied by a brief arousal from sleep. This disturbance, largely unnoticed by the individual, can lead to severe daytime fatigue. Commonly, individuals seek help after being informed by their partners about loud snoring and noticeable breathing pauses during sleep.
The condition is more prevalent among...

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

502
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.
Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Teeth01:15

Teeth

2.0K
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Tonsillitis I: Introduction

2.7K
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymphoid tissue masses at the back of the throat. This condition can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat.
Etiology
Three primary contributing factors have been identified.

Sleep-Wake Cycles01:24

Sleep-Wake Cycles

3.1K
Sleep is an essential physiological process vital to maintaining overall well-being. The reticular activating system (RAS), a network of neurons in the brainstem, regulates wakefulness and sleep. While it may seem passive, sleep consists of distinct cycles, each with its unique characteristics and functions. Two key sleep phases are non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and  rapid eye movement (REM).
NREM Sleep
NREM sleep comprises four progressive stages that seamlessly merge:

Summary

Short sleep duration is linked to a higher risk of periodontitis, a gum disease. This study found a direct association between less sleep and increased prevalence of periodontitis in South Korea.

Area of Science:

  • Oral Health Research
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Sleep duration is increasingly recognized for its potential impact on systemic inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Inadequate sleep may predispose individuals to infections, including oral pathogens implicated in periodontitis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between sleep duration and periodontitis prevalence in a representative South Korean adult population.
  • To determine if sleep duration is an independent risk factor for periodontitis.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study involving 5812 South Korean adults.
  • Multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed, controlling for demographic and lifestyle factors.
  • Periodontitis was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI).

Main Results:

  • An increased odds ratio for periodontitis was observed across various sleep durations (6, 7, 8, and ≥9 hours) compared to sleeping ≤5 hours.
  • The association was particularly pronounced in middle-aged individuals, females, non-smokers, and those with specific blood metal levels and dietary intakes.
  • Mediation analysis suggested partial involvement of lipid profiles, diabetes, Vitamin D levels, and white blood cell count.

Conclusions:

  • A novel, direct, and independent association exists between sleep duration and periodontitis prevalence.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms through which sleep duration influences periodontitis and vice versa.
