Intraspinal extradural anatomical variations in nerve roots were identified, with over 27% showing plexus formation differences. These variations, particularly in the lumbosacral region, may contribute to radiculopathy.
Area of Science:
- Anatomy
- Neurology
- Radiology
Background:
- Nerve root variations can influence neurological conditions.
- Understanding intraspinal extradural anatomy is crucial for diagnosing radiculopathy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify and describe intraspinal extradural anatomical variations of nerve roots.
- To explore the potential role of these variations in radiculopathy.
Main Methods:
- Anatomical study of 33 cadavers.
- Histological examination of extradural nerve root anastomoses.
- Classification of plexus formation types.
Main Results:
- Plexus formation variations observed in 27.3% of cases (prefixed and post-fixed types).
- Extradural anatomical variations occurred in 60.6% of cases, more frequent on the left and bilaterally.
- Atypical spacing noted in 24.2% of instances, especially in the lumbosacral region.
Conclusions:
- Identified novel intraspinal extradural nerve root variations and their spinal canal interrelationships.
- Higher incidence of intraspinal extradural variations observed, particularly between sacral roots.
- Incidence of variations is dependent on plexus formation type.
