Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Summary

Bright light (BL) exposure after night work significantly reduced driving accidents and incidents compared to dim light (DL). This suggests BL can improve alertness and safety for night shift workers commuting home.

Background:

  • Sleep deprivation (SD) impairs vigilance and increases accident risk, particularly after night work.
  • Bright light (BL) is known to enhance alertness and cognitive function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of bright light (BL) versus dim light (DL) on driving performance after a night of sleep deprivation.

Main Methods:

  • 19 subjects underwent three counterbalanced conditions: sleep-deprived with DL, sleep-deprived with BL, and rested with BL.
  • Driving performance was assessed using a high-fidelity simulator after light exposure at the end of the night.

Main Results:

  • Sleep deprivation increased sleepiness and reaction time, and markedly elevated driving incidents and accidents.
  • Bright light exposure (5600 lux) significantly reduced accidents compared to dim light (35 lux), with no terminal accidents in the BL conditions.
  • Bright light suppressed melatonin but had minimal impact on subjective sleepiness or reaction time.

Conclusions:

  • Bright light exposure at the end of a night shift shows potential as a countermeasure to improve driving safety.
  • BL may mitigate the risks associated with driving after night work by reducing accidents and incidents.
