We developed the Neurostimulation Uncertainty Viewer (νView) to visualize deep brain stimulation (DBS) data. This tool helps researchers understand activated brain tissue and patient outcomes for improved DBS therapy.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Medical Technology
- Data Visualization
Background:
- Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a therapeutic intervention for neurological disorders.
- Understanding the precise impact of DBS electrode placement on brain tissue is crucial for optimizing treatment efficacy.
- Current data analysis methods for DBS can be complex and challenging to interpret due to the volumetric and sparse nature of the data.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce the Neurostimulation Uncertainty Viewer (νView), a novel tool designed for exploring deep brain stimulation (DBS) data.
- To provide visual methods for analyzing simulated volumes of tissue activated (VTA) in conjunction with patient outcomes.
- To enhance the understanding of electrode usage and its correlation with therapeutic effects in DBS.
Main Methods:
- Development of the Neurostimulation Uncertainty Viewer (νView) software.
- Integration of simulated VTA data from clinical DBS electrode placements.
- Incorporation of patient outcome data, specifically the Unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS), linked to activated voxels.
- Utilizing volumetric and sparse data representation with multi-value patient results per voxel.
Main Results:
- νView offers a suite of visual exploration methods for DBS data.
- The tool facilitates the examination of the relationship between simulated VTA and patient-reported outcomes (UPDRS).
- Visualizations aid in understanding the spatial distribution of tissue activation and its potential impact.
Conclusions:
- The Neurostimulation Uncertainty Viewer (νView) is a valuable tool for researchers and clinicians working with DBS.
- νView enhances the comprehension of complex DBS data, aiding in the optimization of electrode placement and therapeutic strategies.
- Improved understanding through νView can lead to more effective and personalized DBS therapies for patients.
