Background:

  • Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common human herpesvirus with known associations to various cancers.
  • The correlation between EBV infection and the development and prognosis of acute leukemia (AL) requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and immunophenotyping in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
  • To assess the impact of EBV infection on the clinical prognosis of acute leukemia patients.

Main Methods:

  • Fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (FQ-PCR) was employed to quantify EBV-DNA copy numbers in bone marrow samples.
  • The study included 110 ALL patients, 75 AML patients, and 37 healthy controls.
  • Immunophenotyping and chromosome karyotype analysis were performed on leukemia patient samples.

Main Results:

  • EBV-DNA was detected in 34.6% of AL patients, significantly higher than in healthy controls (5.4%).
  • The EBV infection rate was notably higher in B-cell ALL (44.9%) compared to T-cell ALL (8.3%).
  • EBV-positive ALL patients exhibited increased relapse and mortality rates, indicating an unfavorable prognosis.

Conclusions:

  • Epstein-Barr virus infection is correlated with the incidence of acute leukemia.
  • EBV infection is more prevalent in B-ALL than T-ALL.
  • EBV positivity is associated with a poorer clinical outcome in acute leukemia patients.
