Summary

Late preterm infants show steady motor development, as measured by the Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP), reaching levels comparable to full-term infants by their corrected age. No significant motor differences were found at equivalent ages.

Background:

  • Late preterm infants (born 34-36 weeks gestation) may experience subtle neurodevelopmental differences.
  • Early motor assessment is crucial for identifying potential developmental delays.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze motor development in late preterm infants (LPI) from birth to term-corrected age using the Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP).
  • To compare LPI motor performance with that of full-term infants at birth.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective cohort study evaluated 29 LPI using TIMP at birth and bi-weekly until term-corrected age.
  • TIMP scores from LPI were compared to 88 full-term infants assessed at birth.

Main Results:

  • LPI demonstrated a significant increase in TIMP scores between 38-39 weeks gestation (p<0.05).
  • Mean TIMP scores for LPI were 51.9±5.8 at 34-35 weeks and 62.6±5.2 at 40 weeks.

Conclusions:

  • Late preterm infants exhibit progressive motor development up to their term-corrected age.
