This study found a high incidence of Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in HIV-positive individuals in Spain. Rural living was a significant risk factor for HEV acquisition in this population.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Hepatology
- Virology
Background:
- Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a significant public health concern.
- Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can alter the immune response to viral infections.
- Data on HEV incidence and clinical presentation in HIV-infected individuals is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the incidence of HEV infection in HIV-infected patients.
- To describe the clinical manifestations and analytical alterations associated with HEV infection in this cohort.
- To identify risk factors for HEV acquisition in HIV-positive individuals.
Main Methods:
- A prospective longitudinal study was conducted.
- HIV-infected, HEV-seronegative patients were enrolled.
- HEV seroconversion was monitored every 3-6 months via antibody testing.
- Clinical and analytical data were collected for seroconverted patients.
Main Results:
- A total of 627 patients were followed for a median of 11.96 months.
- The incidence of HEV seroconversion was 7.2 cases per 100 patients/year.
- HEV infection was strongly associated with a rural habitat.
Conclusions:
- HIV-infected patients exhibit a high incidence of HEV infection.
- Rural habitat is a significant risk factor for HEV acquisition in HIV-positive individuals.
- Further research is needed to understand the clinical implications of HEV in this population.

Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.
