Background:

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global pandemic.
  • T2DM is associated with hemostasis disturbances, diabetic vascular disease, and atherosclerosis.
  • Hypercoagulation and erythrocyte pathology are prevalent in T2DM, often linked to inflammatory markers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate tissue factor (TF) levels in patients with T2DM.
  • To compare TF levels in diabetic patients with and without cardiovascular complications.
  • To assess TF as a potential marker for thrombotic risk in T2DM.

Main Methods:

  • Tissue factor (TF) levels were measured using ELISA.
  • Diabetic subjects were recruited from Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Pretoria, South Africa.
  • The study included 20 diabetics with cardiovascular disease and 22 without.

Main Results:

  • TF levels were significantly elevated in both diabetic groups compared to controls.
  • This indicates a higher propensity for clot pathology in individuals with T2DM.
  • Elevated TF suggests a potential role in the development of diabetic vascular complications.

Conclusions:
