    Summary

We developed a novel plastic optical fiber (POF) sensor with a multi-notched structure for enhanced refractive index (RI) sensing. Bending the fiber into a U-shape significantly improved sensitivity, offering a low-cost, simple solution for RI measurements.

    Area of Science:

    • Photonics and Optical Sensing
    • Materials Science
    • Chemical Sensing

    Background:

    • Refractive index (RI) sensing is crucial in various scientific and industrial applications.
    • Plastic optical fibers (POFs) offer advantages like flexibility and low cost for sensor development.
    • Existing POF-based sensors often require complex fabrication or lack sufficient sensitivity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and characterize a novel multi-notched plastic optical fiber (POF) structure for enhanced refractive index (RI) sensing.
    • To investigate the impact of structural modifications, specifically macro-bending, on POF sensor performance.
    • To optimize the sensor design for high sensitivity and resolution in RI measurements.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of a multi-notched structure on a POF surface by pressing a thread rod.
    • Experimental evaluation of RI sensing performance for both straight and U-shaped (macro-bending) POF probes.
    • Optimization of structural parameters for the U-shaped POF probes.
    • Characterization of temperature dependence of the sensor.

    Main Results:

    • Straight multi-notched POF probes exhibited insufficient sensitivity for RI measurements.
    • U-shaped (macro-bending) POF probes demonstrated markedly improved RI sensing performance.
    • Optimized U-shaped POF probes achieved a highest sensitivity of 1130%/RIU with a resolution of 8.44×10-4 RIU in the RI range of 1.333-1.410.
    • The sensor operates with intensity modulation at visible wavelengths.

    Conclusions:

    • The U-shaped multi-notched POF structure is a highly effective design for sensitive RI sensing.
    • This sensor offers a low-cost, simple, and compact solution for RI detection.
    • The developed sensor exhibits potential for various applications requiring precise RI measurements.
